My wife is Khmer race but she lives and grew up in Vietnam so she speaks Tieng Viet better than she speaks Khmer. She is also still in Vietnam so it is hard for her to teach me, when she comes to the US we plan on teaching each other Khmer / English. The USCIS said it will probably be 6 to 12 months until she can come to the US though.

Right, now can understand you and can see whats your problem are. I'm a Cambodain, was borned and lived there untill 1985 but my grand parent were Chineese and Vietnameese. My mum and dad both can speak Chineese, Vietnameese and Khmer.
If your wife can speak some khmer already then it won't be hard for her to learn because there are many Cambodian that lives in USA but she must mix well with Khmer people in order to learn Khmer. For you, that's going to hard my friend, you should try to learn anything about Khmer now before she come over otherwise you will have some difficulty ahead. You must have the patience and do your best to try and understand your wife and her culture.
It's easy for me to say all these things but there are many issue that will arise later and only you can have the last say and fully anderstand them.
My wife is also Khmer, i met her here in UK.
Regards
